RIVIERA BEACH’S BARRACUDA BAY URBAN FARM AND FEDERAL GARDENS URBAN TRAIL HAS BEEN SELECTED FOR THE 2021 NIAGARA PERK YOUR PARK CONTEST

Riviera Beach, Fla, (Sept. 10, 2021) – The Barracuda Bay Urban Farm and Federal Gardens Urban Trail in Riviera Beach has been selected as part of six projects in the 2021 Niagara Perk Your Park Contest from Niagara Bottling in partnership with the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA).

This initiative focuses on park and community space revitalization across the country. To encourage public engagement with these new spaces, improvements will include community gardens, updated playgrounds, new trail amenities, and other ways communities can connect with nature and the outdoors. After funding four projects in 2021, Niagara gives communities a chance to cast their votes for which projects receive funding next.

“Urban Parks function as a conscious tool for revitalization. These parks provide access to recreational opportunities, increase property values, stimulate the economy, and combat crime. The Barracuda Bay Urban Farm in the first phase has harvested just under 2,000 pounds of produce. Beautifying the Federal Gardens Urban Trail would encourage our residents to walk the parks, decrease stress, and obtain more Vitamin D from the sun. I would encourage all residents of Riviera Beach to participate in the voting process to increase our chances of obtaining the funding necessary to improve our community,” says City Council Chairperson Shirley Lanier (District 3).

“This is a great opportunity for the City of Riviera Beach to improve the parks system but also to let the rest of the country know that we are a vibrant, resourceful community on the cutting edge of sustainable living,” says Parks and Recreation Director Richard Blankenship.

The contest runs from Sept. 1 to Sept. 29, with the two winning park projects receiving a renovation worth $90,000.
