1/29/2022 - City partners with PBC to open cold weather shelter
RIVIERA BEACH, FL. (Jan. 29, 2022) – The City is partnering with Palm Beach County to open a cold weather shelter ahead of what meteorologists are predicting potentially record-breaking freezing temperatures this weekend.

Palm Beach County Therapeutic Recreation Center, 2728 Lake Worth Road in Lake Worth, is expected to open at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 29. Palm Tran will provide free transportation to the shelter. The pickup location is Phil Foster Park, 900 Blue Heron Blvd. in Riviera Beach, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The City will also provide blankets to those in need. Blankets were given to all Riviera Beach Police patrol officers. Police have already distributed nearly 20 blankets with the ability to obtain more if needed. Blanket distribution-officers will be actively searching for members of the homeless population and providing them with details about the shelter. Should they refuse, they will be offered a blanket.

“Members of the homeless population are generally more vulnerable, as they have fewer places to take refuge and protect themselves when poor weather conditions arise,” said Riviera Beach Police Major Josh Lewis. “Our City will do everything we possibly can to keep them as safe as possible.”

Temperatures are expected to reach near record-breaking lows over the weekend. The National Weather Service issued a Wind Chill Watch for inland Palm Beach County for late Saturday night into Sunday morning. Treacherous wind chills could cause temperatures to drop to 20 degrees. Temperatures on Saturday will start in the upper 50s and swiftly drop in the evening.
