10/25/2022 - City Hosting Topping Out Ceremony For Fire Station 88
RIVIERA BEACH, FL. (Oct. 25, 2022) – The City is hosting a “topping out” ceremony to celebrate a milestone in the construction of its newest state-of-the-art Fire Station.

The event, on Wednesday, Nov. 2 at 4 p.m., will commemorate the completion of construction of the Fire Station 88’s roof and exterior, which will eventually house first responders who will have the capability of swiftly meeting the safety needs of the community in a comfortable space.

“This topping-out ceremony is an exciting day for the City of Riviera Beach and Riviera Beach Fire Rescue. We can now visually see the fruits of our labor,” Fire Chief John Curd said. “This ceremony signifies the mid-point of construction.”

Construction is slated for completion in March 2023. City officials and project developers broke ground in February on the $17 million Station, located at 1920 W. Blue Heron Blvd. The two-story, 31,000-square-foot, cutting-edge station will feature new technology and equipment that provides energy efficiency, promotes the health and safety of fire personnel while providing temporary space for the Emergency Operations Center and a training center. These features are highly important and will benefit the community in ways past antiquated facilities have not.

The City in September 2020 purchased the former Walgreens property on W. Blue Heron Boulevard to specifically serve as the new location for Fire Station 88. The $2.4 million property was purchased because of its location and size. RIVIERA BEACH, FL. The new Station 88 will replace the existing station that was originally constructed in 1972. Design elements have been incorporated to reduce firefighters' exposure to carcinogens and reduce the phycological and physiological effects associated with the job. In addition, the City has incorporated a training tower – the first of its kind in Riviera Beach's history – into the station to ensure firefighters have the facilities needed to sharpen their skills and provide the best service to the community. Delray Beach-based Kaufman Lynn Construction is designing and building the facility. Constructing Fire Station 88 is just one component of the City’s innovative campaign, entitled “Reimagine Riviera Beach.” The City plans to reconstruct City Facilities that are in desperate need of attention. Many of the facilities were built in the 1970s and have not seen any significant improvements since. As a result, these facilities can no longer accommodate the growing needs of city operations, therefore the City has taken significant steps to address this matter. Actions have been taken as early as January 2020 and the City Council and City Staff are working together to achieve new city facilities for employees, residents, business owners and many other stakeholders to enjoy. Through this initiative, the City will model and potentially spur the redevelopment that is desired throughout the Riviera Beach community. As part of the initiative, the Utility Special District Board voted to replace its current antiquated 63-year-old plant, 800 Blue Heron Blvd., that processes water with outdated technology with a $100 million to $150 million state-of-the-art facility that uses the latest filtration technology.
